Does anyone else struggle with getting their kids to do work? In our house, we have boys who would much rather play outside or build with LEGOs than do their school work and chores. We’ve tried several incentive programs but they usually only work for about two weeks. This past spring our family started a new incentive program. It is simple, easy, and effective. We have been able to keep our kids motivated and on task using this simple strategy for over six months. Here is my secret screen time strategy for getting our kids to do their work without complaining.
Our Secret Screen Time Strategy
Before I continue I need to make a confession. I am a Montessorian at heart and am not a fan of screens. We do not do video games or TV in our house and our kids have limited choices about how they can use screens. They do not get any screen time without earning it. They have selected screen options that are fun but are not what I consider mental junk food. If you’d like a post about our favorite screen time activities please let me know.
Here’s how it works. The kids earn screen time minutes by completing specific tasks. Each task is worth a certain number of minutes. Poor behavior works negatively and reduces their earnings. Their minutes are tallied at 3 pm which means if they are slow about their work they don’t get credit for it. It’s simple and easy.

We have intentionally made it challenging to earn the maximum amount of screen time, but still within reach so they stay motivated. Our kids are becoming more strategic about getting up early, doing their chores voluntarily, and keeping themselves moving throughout the day. They are learning to manage and budget their time. They are also learning the important lesson that hard work results in reward.
Below is our daily check sheet for school and music practices. Our list includes all our subjects every day {which we don’t typically do}. I have laminated our sheet and can cross out subjects to customize each day’s plan.
