I’d like to share our homeschool morning routine with you today. This is what we do on an average homeschooling morning!
Our Morning Homeschool Routine
We like to keep our mornings fairly simple and to the point. Our family likes to get up and start moving fairly early. We do the majority of our academic work in the morning so we can have our afternoons free.
Morning Time
As soon as we have completed our morning chores, we begin our school day as a family with morning time. It is my absolute favorite time of the day! Morning Time typically lasts an hour or less and includes our Bible lesson, Classical Conversations memory work, and a rotation of other fun subjects including art, music appreciation, poetry, picture study, and geography. To learn more about morning time check out How Morning Time Brought Peace to Our Homeschool.
Independent Work
During the next two hours our family rotates through independent work including math & critical thinking skills, reading, language arts, handwriting, and Montessori shelves. Check out how our family homeschools with Montessori here. We have a schedule set up that allows the kids to alternate working independently with doing lessons with me. We like to move around the house during this time to make sure we aren’t distracting each other and are getting some variety in our setting. We use our school room, dining room, and kitchen as learning spaces. Check out our homeschool room tour here.
Break
At this point in the morning, we’ve been hard at work for around three hours and a break is in order. Playing outside is a great way to get fresh air, move our bodies, and rejuvenate. A break also allows me time to prepare some food for the children, tidy our work spaces, and prepare for group learning.
Group Learning
We head back to the table after our break to work on a science or history lesson. Most of the time we enjoy a healthy snack or lunch during this block of work. Group learning time involves read-alouds and some type of hands-on activity such as lapbooking, working in our timeline books, a science experiment, or creative project. You can see our family’s curriculum choices for this year and past years on our Curriculum Choices Over the Years page.
Our Afternoons
Our early afternoon hours are spent wrapping up any work we didn’t finish during the morning as well as practicing our musical instruments and pursuing electives such as French, STEM activities, and art projects.
Once school is done the children sometimes attend an extracurricular activity. We love having time to enjoy reading together, playing, or cashing in any screen time that they earned through our screen time program. Our screen time strategy is especially motivating for our two boys. If you’d like to learn more about it check out Our Secret Screen Time Strategy post.
Our Daily Checklist
We don’t follow a schedule, but definitely rely on a routine and our checklist to keep us on task. Our checklist is created at the beginning of each year and is laminated. You can download a blank PDF of our checksheet here. You can print it out, add your subjects, and laminate for an easy tool to track your progress through your day.
