Our family went on a virtual adventure to Brazil with Classical Conversations Digital Explorer’s Camp! The Digital Explorer’s Camp featured six weeks of fun, hands-on content based on Foundations Cycles 2 & 3. The first week’s focus was world geography, South America, and the cultural geography of Brazil.
Through teaching videos and a resource pack we reviewed geography grammar – compass rose, the five great circles, continents, oceans – and practiced our compass skills with a scavenger hunt. We also practiced drawing a world blob map and tried to make a world map using an orange peel. Spoiler alert: this is not easy!
Next, we zoomed in to the continent of South America and practiced drawing a map which included all the countries and major mountain ranges and rivers. Remembering all the countries is tricky but we all enjoyed practicing our memorization and map drawing skills. Classical Conversations has perfected the art of teaching memorization and has tips, tricks, and techniques to help everyone succeed at memorization regardless of natural ability, learning style, and age. Even I am seeing improvement in my memory (and I have a serious case of “Mom Brain”).
Finally, we arrived at our destination: Brazil – home of the Amazon Rainforest. Each of us researched animals of the rainforest and selected one to share a presentation on.
We all enjoyed a Toucan drawing lesson and enjoyed coloring our birds while listening to a Brazilian folk tale entitled “How the Toad Got His Bruises.”
We also learned to draw the Brazilian flag, learned a few words in Portuguese, and made two tasty Brazilian recipes: Brazilian Ham and Cheese Rolls and Classic Brigadeiros. The cooking is always our favorite and these recipes were no exception!
Thanks for joining us on our virtual visit to Brazil! Tchau!
