About Monsters Inc
Monsters Inc is a computer animated film that was released in 2001 and was Pixar’s fourth full-length feature film.
It’s a charming story of two friends, Sulley and Mike, who work for Monsters Incorporated, the largest scare factory in the monster world. When a little girl named Boo enters the world of Monstropolis, the two lovable monsters go on a mission to get her home safely.
The plot centers around friendship and the unexpected life lessons learned along the way. It is a charming, funny, and heartwarming film that our whole family enjoys.
the Tablescape & Decor
Create a simple yet festive tablescape using a white tablecloth topped with purple felt circles in various sizes. We purchased purple felt at our local fabric store and cut out circles in 8 inches and 4 inches. The dots were bright and the perfect base for our colorful character inspired desserts which served as the centerpiece.
We picked up some bright green felt at the fabric store and cut out placemats in the shape of Mike Wazowski. They were so colorful and fun to use under our white square dinnerware.
To create the placemats we traced a 12-inch bowl and added two horns at top. You will need 1/3 of a yard of 72″ felt to create a set of six placemats. The cost for creating these was just $3 for a set of 6.!
We added a tied lavender napkin, a pair of chopsticks, and a Monsters Inc figure to complete the place setting. The monster figures were such a fun touch and were a hit with our kids.
Anna created a fun Monsters Inc printable banner to decorate the front of our table. Polka dots highlight the color scheme of purple, green, and aqua.
The Menu
Our menu was inspired by our favorite Monsters Inc characters. The treats are all simple to create and so much fun to serve. Several of them only require a few ingredients and are no-bake. Get our recipes and instructions below.
"Boo"-ti-ful Layered Lemonade
This refreshing blended lemonade is tinted aqua and purple and layered to mirror Sulley’s aqua and purple fur. It’s so easy to create, yet so beautiful and tasty. We also served this drink on our Luca dinner. Get our fast and easy layered lemonade recipe here.
Mike Wazowski Fruit Plate
This fruit plate was my favorite dish on our menu! We used green grapes, a Granny Smith apple, a cucumber slice, and a small circle of nori to create Mike. It was so easy and fun to create and serve.
Harryhausen's Sushi
In the film Mike and Celia go to Harryhausen’s in Monstropolis to eat sushi. We are a sushi-loving family and were so happy to include it on our menu. We served our rolls in orange bento boxes and added a side of crisp veggies and dipping sauce.
We made our own veggie rolls but also picked up some California rolls and Shaggy Dog rolls at our local supermarket. Sushi might seem intimidating, but is quite easy to make at home. We also served these veggie rolls on our Big Hero Six dinner. Get our simple beginner tutorial for making your own veggie sushi here.
Roz's Rice Crackers
We just love Japanese rice crackers. They are flavored with soy sauce, sugar, seaweed, and chili and are so pretty. They made a perfect companion to the sushi and crisp fresh vegetables.
Sulley's Surprise Cupcakes
Sulley is just the sweetest! We had a great time creating cupcakes in his signature colors of aqua and purple. These pinata cupcakes are topped with buttercream tinted aqua and are embellished with purple jimmies. And, there is a fun surprise inside! We love this pinata cupcake recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction.
Mike's Cake Pops
There’s so much to love about Mike! We created these easy and fun Mike cake pops. Tender and moist vanilla centers are enveloped in a green candy coating. A large eye and small horns added fun character details.
Celia's Krispie Treats
Celia is a magenta monster with purple hair that resembles snakes. She has one eye just like her boyfriend, Mike Wazowski.
To make Celia Mae Krispie treats, we made a batch of Rice Krispie treats and cut out egg shapes that were around 4-inches long and 2-inches wide. We dipped the top of each Krispie treat in purple tinted candy melts and added one large eye. We used purple jimmies for her eyelashes and mouth. Her hair is made from purple Twizzlers.
George's Macaron Ice Cream Sandwiches
George is an orange monster with yellow stripes and a horn on his head. He has the unfortunate experience of being shaved and scrubbed after being exposed to humans. We created macaron ice cream sandwiches filled with orange sherbet to celebrate George. A pair of eyes gives this treat lots of character. To create the macarons we used this recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction and tinted the batter orange.
Randall's Dipped Pretzels
Randall is long, sleek, and vindictive. Randall’s no pal, but we sure did enjoy munching on these sweet and salty treats created in his honor. To create these we dipped long pretzel rods in candy melts tinted purple and sprinkled them with purple jimmies.
