Captain America may be known for his shield, but it’s hard to argue with a rocket. These Captain America Rocket Dogs are breadstick-wrapped hot dogs threaded onto bamboo skewers and topped with a yellow cheese star. Each one is made from a single strip of refrigerated breadstick dough wrapped around a hot dog and baked until golden, then skewered and finished with a star-shaped cheese topper. They’re an easy 4th of July and Memorial Day recipe made for Captain America cookouts, patriotic parties, and any summer gathering.
Refrigerated breadstick dough wraps cleanly around the hot dog without tearing, bakes up golden and slightly crisp on the outside, and one tube lines up almost perfectly with a standard pack of eight hot dogs. The key is wrapping firmly and securing the bottom end of the dough tightly before baking so the dough doesn’t shrink during the bake. The cheese stars go on after the dogs come out of the oven — a quick press onto the tip of the skewer while everything is still warm is all it takes to hold them in place.
How to Make Captain America Rocket Dogs

Captain America Rocket Dogs
Equipment
- Baking Sheet
- Parchment Paper
- 1½" star cookie cutter
- Sharp knife
- Cutting board
Ingredients
- 1 tube refrigerated breadstick dough (8 breadsticks)
- 8 hot dogs
- 1 block yellow cheese (colby jack or yellow cheddar), sliced ½" thick
- 8 bamboo skewers
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
- Open the breadstick dough and separate into 8 individual strips. Starting at one end of a hot dog, wrap a strip of dough firmly around the length of the hot dog in a spiral, overlapping slightly as you go. Press the dough firmly at both ends to seal and prevent it from shrinking back during baking.
- Place the wrapped rocket dogs on the parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them evenly. Bake for 10 minutes until the dough is golden and cooked through.
- Insert a bamboo skewer lengthwise through the bottom of the wrapped hot dog, pushing it up through the center until the tip of the skewer extends about 1" beyond the top of the hot dog. Wrap the tail end of the dough firmly around the base of the skewer to secure it in place.
- Slice the yellow cheese into ½" thick slabs. Using a 1½" star cookie cutter, cut one star from each cheese slice for a total of 8 cheese stars.
- Press a cheese star firmly onto the tip of each skewer so it sits on top of the hot dog.
- Serve immediately, standing upright in a can or bucket filled with marbles to secure the skewers, or arranged on a platter.
Tips and Tricks
- Wrap the dough firmly and evenly. A tight wrap bakes up the cleanest.
- Securing the dough at the bottom of the skewer is the most important step — if it’s loose, the dough will shrink upward during baking and bunch at the top.
- Can these be made ahead? The rocket dogs are best served immediately out of the oven while the dough is still warm and slightly crisp. If you need to get ahead, bake them, cool completely, and reheat at 350°F for 5 minutes before skewering and adding the cheese stars.
- To display them upright, fill a tin can, bucket, or small pail with marbles and push the skewers into the marbles to secure them. See how we styled ours in the Captain America Party post.
- These pair naturally with the Captain America Star Charcuterie, Stars & Stripes Fruit Kabobs, and Captain America Shield Cheesecake for a complete Captain America party spread.
