Smørrebrød is a Danish lunch tradition and literally means bread with butter. It was invented by working people who had to eat their lunch away from home. They would pile leftovers from last night’s dinner on top of their bread for a hearty lunch. Smørrebrød is almost always made with sourdough rye bread and meat, fish, cheese, or seafood as toppings. We featured Smørrebrød on our Around the World with Disney Movies: Denmark study.
What is Smorrebrod?
Smørrebrød has become popular in the United States and there are several restaurants serving Smørrebrød. Recipes can be simple or elaborate. We like to create Smørrebrød with simple ingredients we have on hand: curried egg salad, cheeses, hard boiled egg slices, roast beef, potatoes, fresh greens, avocado, onions, radishes, tomatoes, and cucumbers.
